The hot tub in winter: why February beats July
Minus ten outside, plus thirty-nine in the water. Why winter dates at a cabin with a hot tub are the most underrated, and how to prepare for them.
Most people book a cabin with a hot tub for summer, because summer means holidays. Then they come in July, get into hot water with thirty degrees in the air, and after twenty minutes they have had enough. In winter it is the other way round, and that is the whole point.
Minus ten and plus thirty-nine
The hot tub holds about 39 degrees whatever the weather. In July, at thirty outside, the difference is nine degrees and the body barely registers it. In January, at minus ten, the difference is fifty.
That is not a metaphor, it is physics, and it is why the winter hot tub works completely differently. You sit in hot water with steam rising over it, your wet hair starts to frost, and at the same time you are warm. It is hard to describe to someone who has not done it, and practically nobody goes back to calling the hot tub a summer thing after the first time.
The Finnish sauna heated to 90 degrees closes it from the other side. Stepping out of it straight into the frost is the shortest route to the state where you stop thinking about work.
What specifically changes in winter
| Summer | Winter | |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast in the hot tub | 9 degrees | up to 50 degrees |
| How long you realistically sit | 20-30 minutes | an hour and more |
| Traffic in the area | the year's busiest | practically none |
| The second cabin | often taken | often empty |
| Bikes and SUPs | yes | no |
| The bonfire | pleasant | this is its moment |
| Dark from | 9 pm | 4 pm |
The last row looks like a drawback, and for some guests it is. But on a trip for two, an early dusk simply means a longer evening, and the evening is what you come here for.
Why winter is quieter
In July there is traffic in the area towards Lake Huta and the usual holiday circulation. In February there is nothing. On top of that, snow muffles sound, so the night is quieter than at any other time of year.
There is a second effect: midweek in winter, the second cabin often stands empty. There is then nobody on the whole grounds but you. That is the scenario guests ask about when they want absolute certainty of meeting no one, and in winter you get it without paying to rent both cabins.
How to prepare
Announce your arrival time. In winter this matters more than in summer, because heating the hot tub in frost takes longer. One message a day ahead and you step into ready water instead of waiting two hours.
Arrive in daylight. It gets dark before four, and the final stretch is country roads. On a first stay it is definitely worth arriving before dusk.
Pack a few extra things. A hat, warm socks, gloves, flip-flops with soles that do not slip on wet surfaces. Face cream, because the sauna and frost together dry the skin faster than you expect. Bathrobes and towels are on site; those you do not pack.
Order the food. In winter the argument for it is stronger than in summer: in the dark, below zero, nobody feels like driving fifteen minutes to the shop. Breakfast and dinner cost 60 zł per person per night each.
What a winter day looks like
Afternoon. Arrival, unpacking, the first coffee. The hot tub already warm.
Dusk, meaning around 4 pm. This is the right moment. You get into the hot tub as it is getting dark and sit until it is completely dark. Steam over the water, silence around, no light except what you switch on yourselves.
Evening. Sauna, then dinner. Or the other way round. The 4K outdoor cinema runs under the covered shelter in winter too, and watching something outside in freezing weather, wrapped in a blanket, is strangely good.
Night. The cabin is warm. Outside the window nothing is happening, and that is a plus.
Morning. Breakfast at whatever time you choose. If snow has fallen, the grounds look completely different than the evening before.
Rada od Filipa
The winter hot tub after dark is better than the winter hot tub in daylight, and I have no proof of this other than everyone saying so. Get in after dusk, switch off the terrace light and give your eyes a few minutes. On a clear night you can see stars here that simply do not exist in the city.
What winter does not have
Bikes and SUP boards, obviously. They are included in the stay all year round, but in January nobody will use them.
The fishing pond at Domek Marzeń, if the water freezes. Then Domek Marzeń loses its only advantage over Domek Na Uboczu and you can safely take whichever is free.
The bathing spot. Lake Huta in winter is a walk, not a beach.
A long day. If you plan a trip to Toruń, you realistically have from ten to three for it.
Who winter will suit better than summer
Couples who come for the quiet, not for a programme. Everyone who would not swim in the pond in July anyway. People who cope badly with heat. And those who want the grounds entirely to themselves without paying for both cabins.
Who summer will suit better
Families with children, because the trampoline, volleyball, bikes and long evenings outdoors are a summer season after all. Anglers, because a frozen pond ends the topic. Everyone who wants to combine the stay with swimming in the lake.
Both answers are fine. The point is just not to book July on autopilot if what you really care about is the hot tub.

Najczęstsze pytania
Does the hot tub work in freezing weather?
Yes, and that is when it works best. The water holds about 39 degrees regardless of whether it is plus twenty or minus ten outside.
Is it not cold on the way from the cabin to the hot tub?
It is, for a dozen or so seconds. Bathrobes wait in the cabin and the walk is short. For most guests that moment is part of the attraction, not its cost.
Is winter cheaper?
The rate is the same: 500 zł per night Sunday to Thursday, 600 zł at the weekend. In winter, though, it is easier to find a free midweek date.
What should we bring in winter that we do not need in summer?
A hat, warm socks, flip-flops with soles that do not slip on wet snow, and gloves if you plan a bonfire. The rest as usual.
Is there anything to do in winter besides the hot tub and sauna?
The 4K outdoor cinema runs under the covered shelter all year, there are board games in the cabins, and a bonfire in freezing weather works better than in a heatwave. Bikes and SUP boards are off.
Are the cabins warm?
Yes, both are heated, which at seven in the morning in January matters more than you would think.
Is the access road passable in winter?
Yes, but the final stretch is country roads. In snow it is worth driving more carefully and leaving earlier, to arrive in daylight.
