Your first time in the countryside, if you have lived in a city all your life
Darkness, insects, mud, no shop around the corner and a silence that can unsettle. An honest list of things that surprise city guests, and how to handle them.
Most texts about farm stays describe how beautiful it is. This one describes the things that surprise people coming from the city for the first time, because it is better to know about them in advance than to discover them on the first evening.
Nothing on this list is a flaw. It is simply the countryside, and the countryside works differently from a housing estate.
The dark is really dark
In the city it is never fully dark. Street lamps, adverts, the neighbours' windows, the glow over the centre. You step out at eleven at night and you can see where you are going.
Here there are no street lamps. When you switch off the terrace light, it gets dark in a way most people do not know. The first time it can be disorienting, and after two days it becomes the thing you tell your friends about, because you can see stars that simply do not exist in the city.
Practically: the torch in your phone is enough, but remember it when walking to the hot tub in the evening. On a first stay we recommend arriving in daylight, to see the grounds before dusk.
The silence can unsettle
That sounds absurd in a text by a place that sells silence, but it is true and better said.
For some guests the first night is surprisingly restless. A brain used to constant background noise starts hunting for sounds that are suddenly not there, and picks up every smallest one. It happens that people say they could not fall asleep because it was too quiet.
It usually passes after one night, and the second night is then the best in months.
Also worth knowing: silence in the countryside does not mean no sounds. In summer the birds start around four in the morning. At night it is surprisingly lively: owls, deer, sometimes something you cannot identify. During field work season you hear farm machinery in the daytime.
The difference is that none of these sounds requires any reaction from you.
Insects
We are by the water, so from May there are mosquitoes, and in summer the rest of the crew. It is not a plague and no worse than any other place by the water in Poland, but if you live on the tenth floor of a block, it can be a surprise.
Practically: repellent, especially for the evening by the bonfire. Spiders in the corners of the cabin happen, and they do not mean we did not clean; they mean we are by a forest.
Mud exists
The grounds are natural: grass, earth, unevenness. This is not a paved park or a hotel garden.
After longer rains it can be soft. In spring, after the thaw, too. If you arrive in white shoes, you will leave in brown ones.
Practically: shoes you will not mourn, plus a spare pair. With a dog and with children this is not a suggestion, it is a necessity.
The shop is not around the corner
The nearest shop, a Dino, is under a kilometre away, about three minutes by car. But it is not a city: no convenience store downstairs, no food delivery, nothing open at eleven at night.
Practically: do the bigger shop on the way, before you turn off the main road. Or order food from us, 60 zł per person per night per meal, and the problem disappears. On a first stay we strongly recommend at least the first dinner, because after the journey nobody feels like going anywhere any more.
Rada od Filipa
The most common mistake of city guests is planning to shop "on the spot". In the city that works, because everything is five minutes away. Here it means that after unpacking you get back in the car and drive half an hour both ways, instead of sitting in the hot tub. Buy on the way, or order from us.
Navigation can be unreliable
The final stretch of the drive is country roads. In places like this, GPS can propose a route across a field or lose itself at an unnamed fork.
Practically: we send directions together with the booking confirmation. Worth saving offline, because signal can vary. On a first stay it really is better to arrive in daylight.
Signal and internet are two different things
Mobile signal in the countryside can vary, and that is normal.
The internet is a separate matter: we have Starlink, a satellite connection on which programmers and video editors sending clients heavy files work here. The wifi is stable, streaming and video calls work.
That means messengers and internet calls will work even when a classic phone call keeps breaking up.
Without a car it is hard
Rogowo is a village. Bikes are included in the stay and are enough for a ride along field roads, but they will not replace a car for a trip to the shop, to Lake Huta or to Toruń.
You can reach the area by public transport, but getting around afterwards is heavily limited. Worth factoring in when planning.
What we specifically do not have
Since we are being honest, the full list:
- We have no lake of our own. There are ponds by the cabins; the bathing spot is Lake Huta, 10 minutes' drive
- The grounds are not fully fenced. The dog can run, but it is not an enclosed run
- There is no reception and no 24h staff. We greet you in person and are on the phone
- There is no restaurant and no room service
- There are no spa treatments, massages or a pool. There is the hot tub and the sauna
- There are no tourist attractions in the area besides Toruń, an hour from here
What you get instead
A hot tub with jacuzzi and a Finnish sauna exclusively for your cabin, with no time limit on a booked day and no reserving an hour. Two cabins on the whole grounds, 250 metres apart, separated by a wooden panel fence, so you see and hear no one.
A morning without an alarm and without a fixed breakfast hour. An evening in which there is nothing to do and nobody expects it of you.
And that darkness we wrote about at the start, the one that disorients. After two days most guests say it was the best part.
If it turns out this is not for you
It can happen. Silence does not work for everyone, the lack of stimuli wakes unease instead of relief in some people, and the countryside is simply not for everybody.
We have one rule for that situation: if you are not happy with your stay and you tell us what was wrong, we refund 100 percent of the money. No fine print. The only condition is to say what failed, because otherwise we have nothing to fix.
The practical first-timer list
- Arrive in daylight
- Shop on the way or order the food
- Write us what time you will arrive, so the hot tub is hot
- Bring shoes you will not mourn and a warmer hoodie
- Save the directions offline
- Plan nothing for the first day
