Spring in the countryside: the first warm weekend, the May holiday and what happens then

Spring in the countryside is short and happens fast. For a few weeks in April and May everything changes from week to week, and then it becomes summer and stays that way until September. It is the shortest season of the year and at the same time the one in which dates vanish fastest.

What starts working in spring

The terrace. This is the thing that comes back. From mid-April breakfast outside stops being an act of courage, and from May it becomes the default choice.

The bonfire at a sensible hour. In winter it gets dark at four, in summer after nine. In spring dusk falls more or less when you feel like it.

The bikes. Dry field roads, no heat yet. April and May are the best cycling period of the whole year.

The fishing pond at Domek Marzeń. Spring is one of the better biting periods. A rod included in the stay, catch and release applies.

The SUP boards. On the pond, yes. On Lake Huta too, though the water is still cold, so standing on the board rather than swimming next to it.

The green. Sounds like a filler, but at a place whose only scenery is the grounds and the woods, it is a real difference compared with November.

What is not there yet

Swimming. Lake Huta in May is a walk, not a beach. Realistically from June.

Warm evenings. April and May can give twenty-five degrees by day and five in the evening. A warmer hoodie is compulsory, even if you set out in a t-shirt.

Weather certainty. This is the main feature of spring in Poland and cannot be worked around. The May holiday can be scorching and can be rainy, and a forecast two weeks out means nothing.

Dry ground. After the thaw and spring rains it can be soft. Shoes you will not mourn are a good idea, especially if you come with a dog.

Mosquitoes are not there yet in April, but from May they start appearing, because we are by the water. Repellent is worth having.

The May holiday, the most sought-after date of the year

Let us say plainly how it looks with two cabins.

When a few million people are off in the same four days, two cabins vanish in hours, not weeks. That applies to every small accommodation, not just us: a big resort with fifty rooms has a buffer, we have none.

You should book two to three months ahead. That is not an exaggeration or a sales technique, just a description of what happens every year.

The price over the May holiday is the same as on an ordinary weekend: 600 zł per night with a minimum of 2 nights. We do not raise rates because of a holiday in the calendar, and that surprises some guests used to holiday pricing.

The week after the May holiday, advice against our own interest

If you have flexibility, move the trip by a week.

You get: the same price, practically the same weather, the same green, much better availability and a noticeably quieter area, because the summer traffic has not started yet and the holiday traffic has just ended.

You lose: nothing, except that you have to take days off that you would not need over the holiday.

Over the long weekend we are full anyway, so we say this with no self-interest: stays a week later are simply better.

How many nights to take

The standard: two is the weekend minimum, three the optimum, a single night possible only Sunday to Thursday.

In spring, though, there is one extra argument for three nights: the weather is changeable. With two nights, one rainy day is half the stay. With three it is a third, and there is usually still a day left when you can sit outside.

What to pack in spring

• Sunscreen, because spring sun works harder than it seems
• A rain jacket, because a spring forecast is a suggestion

There is no bad season, there are different ones. In spring you come to watch everything start moving, and that is something that cannot be rescheduled to another date.
